I couldn't resist posting this one--Paul Potts, the cellphone salesman from Wales won the Britain Has Talent contest! He got a recording contract and plans to pay off debts and get his teeth fixed with the award money. Go Paul--see you at the Met!
I'd like to think that if a singer of his caliber competed on American Idol singing a classical piece like "Nessun Dorma" that person would win, too. But I'm sorry to say that I doubt it.
What do you think?
QG, Unfortunately, I don't think that if one in the US were to sing opera of that caliber, that the public would support it. I think they would choose music from the stylized singing we hear everyday. Sad that we as a culture aren't more open to lots of variety of music.
ReplyDeleteHow did this guy stay under the radar until this point? Fabulous story and voice. Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteWonderful news. I've been following Paul Potts over at my blog as well.
ReplyDeleteYAY, PAUL! Woooo Hooooo...and sadly, I think I agree with what Cathy said.
ReplyDeleteSWEET UPDATE!
ReplyDeleteQG - I've linked to Paul Potts too. Wow. I actually do think that if this had happened in US, the crowds would have gone wild as well. (Wishful thinking?)
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that Diana Butler Bass (or whoever said it)was right in saying that well done music in worship - whether it's traditional, classical, or contemporary - done well,is always appreciated.
Yay for Paul!!! Thanks for the update and link.
ReplyDeleteI don't think his talent would have translated on American Idol; a program clearly geared to finding the next pop sensation for the teeny bopper set.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I DO think he would have done well on America's Got Talent which is the parallel show to the one he was on in Britain. There is a lot more variety to be found there.
Thus concludes my procrastinating dissertation on s--t tv.
I think jle is right (I hope so!) If all the RGBPs and our friends voted, we could contribute to it being so -:)
ReplyDeleteHis voice is just amazing!!
ReplyDeletewoohoo!
ReplyDeleteI want to think he would have won, but I too doubt it. Though there's talent of all kinds on America's Got Talent, so maybe...but my theory is that the reality-tv-watching-american-public is just less interested in "high culture" than the parallel british population. I would like to be wrong....
Thanks for posting this!!!
I'm glad to hear this!
ReplyDeletefantastic wasn't he- it was a nail bitting final- and the nation have really taken him to their hearts- odd folk we Brits at times!!!
ReplyDeleteSince you introduced him, I'd tuned into You Tube and watched his big 'win'.
ReplyDeleteI blubbered through his semi-final and his win. What a moving story. And what a fantastic voice!!
And I'm not usually an opera fan. But I will buy his CD.
I saw that clip somewhere on another blog--I'm losing track of where I've been. It made me get all teary-eyed. I'm so glad he won.
ReplyDeleteNow, that's my kind of Idol! What amazing talent...and I agree with the others that an American audience would not appreciate it nearly as much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, so I'd see it on Katherine's blog, www.meaningandauthenticity.blogspot.com I would have missed it otherwise, as I don't know much about youtube or tv. Beautiful, heartwarming, and divine!
