Lately with all the doom and gloom news everywhere, although I have always been a political and news junkie, I find myself avoiding my usual TV fare and looking for some good old mindless TV.
I find that I can forget my worries watching cable shows like House Hunters, Project Runway, What Not To Wear, Top Chef, Designed To Sell or Chopped. Now El Jefe doesn't understand the appeal of these shows at all, so I tell him that they are similar to sports for the non-sports fan.
When he watches Rockets basketball or Longhorn football he loves to anticipate the next move the player makes and then second-guess and criticize : "NOOOOO, what was he thinking when he passed to the guard?" "That was NOT an interception, his knee was down", etc. etc.
That's what I do with these shows: "I'd pick THAT house", That dress is truly HEINOUS", "He should have put a cream sauce on that instead of balsamic" etc. etc.
The difference is the volume and the number of the comments.
What show do you watch when you want a bit of mindless TV? I need to find some new ones until Project Runway and Top Chef come back.

THE.BEST.MINDLESS.SHOW. EV'ER....
Big Bang Theory on Monday nights. You will laugh ssssooo hard!! It is just so funny.
I also love The Office.
I am nuts for LOST but that is not mindless.
Mythbusters ... funny, yet scientific in a strange sort of way !!
I'm afraid I got addicted to the Real OC Housewives again. But it isn't so much mindless (well, it is that) as unrepentantly and irretrievably ATROCIOUS.
Several years ago I was having anxiety attacks and watching reruns of Seinfeld really helped. I would advise others to try it - it's almost impossible to be down and anxious while watching Jerry and friends!
These days I do the same as you -- my daughter and I watch foodtv and hgtv when we need a break from the downer news!
I watch the Food Network. When I want to laugh, I still love reruns of "Everybody Loves Raymond" - if for no other reason to see a family that's as crazy as mine! - and "Spin City.
Dave joins RC with Mythbusters, much to my chagrin.
GG - I agree with you on the Real Housewives of OC! I can't believe people are that shallow. I'm from OC, and neither my friends or me are like that!
Dave loves Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs and Man v. Wild. Essentially anything on Discovery Channel.
I've been watching a lot of Divine Design and Ask Genevieve, which feature my two favorite HGTV designers. Also, highly suggest Top Design and Design Star when they reappear on Bravo and HGTV, respectively.
Believe it or not, my mindless TV shows are pretty much on MTV. Watch a lot of Parental Control, True Life, and Room Raiders. Also like Oxygen's "Snapped". And for some reason I like "Cheaters"
In my zeal to pry my son away from Nickolodean, Disney and Cartoon Dreckwork mind melting shows, I encourage him by joining in watching Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Most Extreme and other Discovery channel shows.
For mindless, we enjoy together: HG's: Color Splash and Divine Design; AFV; Cash Cab and Ace of Cakes as well as Food Networks cooking competition shows.
When I'm not there, it's back to child dreck for him. Though I think I've hooked him on old Black Adders
I'm definitely going to check out Big Bang Theory and Mythbusters. Great suggestions, everyone!
Like you - House Hunters, What Not to Wear, DOG Bounty Hunter, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and reruns of MASH, Home Improvement and the Cosby Show!
Pretty sad, but it is mindless entertainment.
Oh yeah, and Mythbusters!
Sometimes even Iron Chef.
For LH it's the endless Weather Channel.
you really have to watch house hunters with someone so you can ask the all important question at the end of the show - "so...which house do ya think they picked?"
