Blog Controls

This weekend I was reading a review of a book in the local paper. The book was written by a Houston-area blogger and the reviewer also interviewed her. One of the questions was how did she decide what subjects were "off-limits" on the blog. She said she kept three "control persons" in mind for this purpose--her father, an ex-boyfriend and one other close friend.

Which made me think about my blog control persons. I would say they are Portia and Babs (and by extension other family members who do read my blog regularly), and the blogging friends I have made over the years who do NOT agree with me on all things religious and political. Thinking about their reactions to a possible post may prompt me to revise it or decide that it is more prudent not to post it.

Who are your Blog Control Persons?

I know my daddy and one of my aunts read my blog so that is what I think about when I write.

Even then, I would never write something that would be untrue. I just always keep in mind that it could hurt. I have never wanted my blog to be used to hurt someone.

definitely my dad, and also the most sensitive church member (since I know that person also reads my blog). I definitely still post things they might disagree with or find challenging, but nothing they would find too revealing or attacking...

I don't think my theology or politics are a secret, but I try to restrain myself in those areas in which I think blogging or rl friends might be offended or where what I write on the spur of the moment might muddy the waters more than clarify. I don't write about my field ed congregation and I don't write about people I see in spiritual direction (or whom I saw in CPE) except occasionally in the most general way. I try not to violate the privacy of anyone in my family with respect to their feelings or reactions. And I really do try to be careful with the anger and frustration I have expressed in the past year and not say anything I wouldn't say to someone's face.

I suppose I fail at all of the above rather more frequently than I would care to.

Like Gannet Girl, I have no outward controls. They are all inside. Common sense might be one. My wife will occasionally personally comment off line and in the past year has only questioned one post.

As far as QG is concerned, I have not any of your posts that I thought were inappropriate.

Although I blog anonymously, I never post anything I wouldn't be willing to sign my name to. My facebook restraints are the fact that my mother, my bishop and teens in my congregation see my status updates!
