Talking About Jesus

Our Vice- Moderator, Rev. Byron Wade, puts his finger on one of the causes of the decline of the PCUSA with his recent blog post: Is It Just Me or Are We Supposed To Be Talking About Jesus?

Thanks for the link. I absolutely agree with the thoughts of your vice moderator. The teachings, ministry and life of Jesus has been minimalized or in some traditions disregarded all together.

I make a point of preaching about Jesus with every sermon I deliver.

FWIW, I have come across several CIFs that find it necessary to state "relationship with Jesus Christ" (in some wording or another) as a qualification. I guess they've learned it cannot be assumed.

I like what Wade said: "I believe that Jesus Christ holds us together despite our differences."

Several months ago, J and I were looking at a new church website that had sent a mailer to our house and it took us several layers into the web before we could find Jesus' name. The harder we looked, the more amazed we were.

I just finished reading "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller and I think this quote relates to our deepest feelings about Jesus: "...the trouble with deep belief is that it costs something. And there is something inside me, some selfish beast of a subtle thing that doesn't like the truth at all because it carries responsibility and if I actually believe these things I have to do something about them."

(I wrote "ouch" in the blank spot next to that paragraph in the book!)
